Roewe iMAX8 EV

2026-09-24 04:30:00

The Roewe iMAX8 EV is a mid-to-large-size fully electric MPV under SAIC Roewe, officially launched in August 2022. Built on the platform architecture of the petrol-powered iMAX8, the model was engineered to deliver a quieter, more comfortable, and eco-friendly mobility solution for mid-to-high-end corporate and family buyers via an electrified powertrain. Serving as a crucial pillar of Roewe’s MPV line-up, it initially secured a strong foothold in the fully electric MPV segment thanks to its plush ride quality and exceptional packaging efficiency.

Model Overview

The Roewe iMAX8 EV is positioned as a mid-to-large-size luxury electric MPV, with a strong emphasis on passenger ride comfort and versatile cabin flexibility.

Market Tags: Mid-to-large-size fully electric MPV, airline-style captain seats, ultra-quiet cabin, dual-purpose family/corporate vehicle.

Product Highlights: Its core strength lies in its remarkably efficient cabin packaging. Benefiting from the ultra-slim 125mm "Rubik's Cube" battery pack, the MPV achieves a class-leading low step-in height of just 395mm alongside generous interior headroom. Furthermore, premium touches such as second-row "first-class" airline captain seats and the "smart mobile Magic Bar" (a movable centre console with integrated heating and cooling) significantly elevate the overall cabin experience for both business and family duties.

Market Positioning: During its market run, the official retail price ranged from RM259,800 to RM359,800. Its target demographic encompassed corporate fleets seeking zero-emission executive transport and large families requiring uncompromising interior space and comfort.

Development History

Origins: Amid rising EV adoption rates, SAIC Roewe integrated its proven iMAX8 chassis with a fully electric powertrain to cater to growing market demand for a dedicated, comfort-oriented electric MPV.

Key Milestones:

August 2022: The Roewe iMAX8 EV officially debuted, offered in five distinct variants.

2023 to 2024: With the rapid rise of competitive electric and PHEV MPVs like the Denza D9 and Zeekr 009, coupled with shifts in brand strategy, the iMAX8 EV faced increasingly fierce market headwinds.

2026: According to recent market data, the model has essentially been phased out, with monthly deliveries dropping to zero in the first half of 2026. The brand's strategic focus has since pivoted to DMH (super hybrid) architecture models, such as the iMAX8 DMH.

Market Performance

Over its product lifecycle, the Roewe iMAX8 EV transitioned from an eagerly anticipated new entrant to gradually exiting the spotlight.

Competitive Landscape: Upon its 2022 launch, its primary rival was models like the Voyah Dreamer. While it held distinct advantages in NVH insulation and seating comfort, the rapid proliferation of 800V high-voltage platforms and advanced ADAS suites left the 400V-based iMAX8 EV trailing in both DC fast-charging speeds and onboard technology.

Owner Feedback: User satisfaction primarily praised its "solid chassis setup, exceptionally plush second-row seating, and superb NVH refinement." However, some owners noted shortcomings in long-distance driving range, high-speed DC charging rates, and infotainment ecosystem responsiveness compared to newer EV rivals.

Core Technologies

Powertrain: Powered by SAIC’s next-generation intelligent electric drive unit featuring 8-layer Hair-pin winding technology, delivering a maximum output of 180kW and 350Nm of peak torque.

Battery Architecture: Utilises an ultra-slim "Rubik's Cube" battery pack measuring just 125mm in total thickness, significantly expanding vertical cabin space. It delivers a CLTC-rated electric range of up to 570km.

Dimensions and Packaging: Measures 5,016mm long, 1,909mm wide, and 1,796mm tall, with a 3,000mm wheelbase. The ultra-slim battery design enables an ultra-low 395mm step-in height and 1,045mm of interior cabin clearance, ensuring effortless ingress and egress for children and elderly passengers.

Cabin Tech & Comfort: Outfitted with an 11-speaker BOSE audio system, multi-layer acoustic laminated glass, and a motorized "Magic Bar" centre console that slides fore and aft across the cabin, catering to mobile office duties and leisure travel alike.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, SAIC Roewe’s MPV roadmap has decisively shifted towards DMH super hybrid technology. The Roewe iMAX8 EV has concluded its production lifecycle, with future MPV developments centred on the DMH hybrid platform to deliver enhanced packaging efficiency and extended touring ranges (such as the 1,500km+ total range claimed for the iMAX8 DMH). Future demand within the fully electric MPV segment will be addressed by sibling brands or upcoming EV nameplates under the wider SAIC Group.
